Siegfried

Composer and Librettist: Richard Wagner Reimagined by: Johnathan Dove

In part three of Richard Wagner’s mythical tetralogy, The Ring Cycle, the hero Siegfried spends his days cajoling Mime, the Nibelung dwarf and brother of Alberich who raised Siegfried after the deaths of his parents. Siegfried is unaware of his parents’ incestuous relationship or that is grandfather is Wotan, ruler of the gods. A wanderer (Wotan in disguise) visits Mime and prophesies that only one without fear can meld Siegmund’s sword “Nothung” into a fearsome weapon that can be used to slay the giant Fafner, who guards the ring in the form of a dragon. Siegfried eventually slays Fafner and then fights off the treachery of Mime as he pursues the resting place of a beautiful woman (Wotan’s Valkyrie daughter Brunnhilde) who can only be awakened by a fearless man who conquers fire to rescue her.
